Victory Day 2021: few people in Minsk streets and detentions in regions

On May 9, Minsk held festivities to celebrate Victory Day. Belsat photo correspondent observed the official and unofficial parts of the program.

The official part of the 76th anniversary celebration of the end of the Great Patriotic War was held in the center of Minsk in Victory Square. The part of Independence Avenue, close to the place of the official celebration, was closed off by the law enforcement agencies. At 11 a.m., Alyaksandr Lukashenka and his sons laid flowers at the Victory Memorial.

Later, activist Halina Lahatskaya was detained in Minsk Victory Square. She is now in Pershamaiski District Police Department and, according to the police, she will soon be sent to the TDF. It is not known why she was detained. There are also reports of detentions in the regions.

Among the participants of the festive event were also pro-Russian activists who came out with banners for the “Immortal Regiment” and portraits of Lenin and Stalin.

Part of the celebrations in Minsk was also held near the Stella and the Palace of Sports. An exhibition of modern military equipment was also held there.

This year, Victory Day was celebrated against the backdrop of a deep political crisis. The authorities held a fireworks display at 11 p.m., using primarily the colors of the national flag. Democratic activists are calling for fireworks at 11:34 p.m. today to commemorate the victory over fascism.
