Former Belarus PM Syarhei Rumas: ‘I am not arrested’

Last week, Belarusian security agencies detained a number of persons belonging to the inner circle of former Prime Minister Syarhei Rumas. Since then, the 51-year-old politician has not appeared in public.

As reported earlier, Henadz Sysoyeu, chairman of Borisovdrev, and Belagroprombank’s top managers linked to Rumas were interrogated in a corruption case and even taken to a remand prison. The Belarusian State Security Committee (KGB) neither confirmed nor dened the information about the detention of Syarhei Rumas then. On the same day, his wife Zhanna told TUT.by that her husband was abroad.

According to information provided by the Belarusian newspaper Nasha Niva, he is staying in London; he flew to celebrate his eldest son Valery’s birthday of. Valery Rumas holds the position of Assistant Director at the London branch of the Russian investment company VTB Capital.

“No offense, but I will not make any comment. You have heard that I am alive, I am not arrested, but I will not comment on anything. Thank you for your concern,” Syarhei Rumas said when reached by a NN journalist on the phone.

Mr Rumas served as Belarus’ Prime Minister from August 2018 to June 2020. He also woeked in the financial sector, two of his four sons live in European countries.
