President of Lithuania nominates Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya for Nobel Peace Prize, media report

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has nominated Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya for the Nobel Peace Prize, news agency BNS reports, citing its own sources.

According to the rules, heads of state are entitled to nominate candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize. Applications can be submitted until January 31.

This information has not yet been officially confirmed. The press service of the Lithuanian president declined to comment on the information about the nomination of Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya for the Nobel Prize.

“We do not comment on information about the Nobel Peace Prize,” said Nausėda advisor Ridas Jasiulionis.

In September 2020, Gitanas Nausėda said that Lithuania is ready to assume the main role and become a mediator between the protesters and the authorities of Belarus. According to the President, it is the duty of Lithuania as a free state, which has suffered from repressive and occupation regimes. In early January, Nausėda said that Lithuania and the European Union supported the struggle of Belarusians for freedom and democracy.
