‘Speak about your problems not only in kitchens’. Trade unions’ May Day rally in Minsk
The city authorities have allowed independent trade unions to hold a May Day rally in Kyiv park. The issues of the so-called social parasites’ decree, utility bills, salaries and unemployment pays are expected to be raised at the event.
‘Alms-gifts are more than Belarusian unemployment pays’
The participants will demand a shift in the social and economic policy, Alyaksandr Yarashuk, Head of the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions, told Belsat TV. According to him, the current practice has already brought the country to a dead end.
“The government fixation on the command economy has brought discredit upon itself. Secondly, workers’s salaries have hit the bottom: they are less than those of 2010, but prices are steadily rising. In this view, we demand that the government take measures to get the things under control. Thirdly, we would like to remind them of resprecting the workers’ rights,” Yarashuk stressed.
Henadz Fyadynich, Chairman of the REP independent trade union, promisef to draw the authorities’ attention to the impoverishment of the nation. “It is very important that people publicly chant the slogans they usually use only in their own kitchens,” he said.
“There are so many issues which give reasons for the people’s concern; a rally is a great opportunity to discuss and speak them out. We just want to be heard,” the trade union activist stressed.

“If the government wants the country to be doing well, they should carry out both economic and political reforms. If they fail to do it, the future of Belarus will very unpredictable and difficult,” Fyadynich said at the rally

The organisers urged people to bring only registered symbols to the event. The authorised rally is expected to end at about 16.00 (Minsk time). The organisers hope that about 2,000 persons will come.
