Unique GDL plate found near Bryansk

The historical artifact found in Svensk monastery reminded of a time when the Bryansk lands were part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

The white stone slab with the GDL emblem was found during restoration work. It can be dated XIV-XV century and is not like the monuments of the Middle Ages that were found earlier, Bryansk News reports.

The Svensk monastery is located on the banks of Dzisna, four kilometers away from Bryansk. It was founded by Prince Roman of Chernigov in 1288.

Bryansk became part of the GDL in 1356 and remained there until 1500. Historian Andrei Yanushkevich draws attention to the fact that Bryansk citizens at the time did not want to join Russia. The town was taken by the troops of Ivan III by deception, when the local deputy Stanislau Bartashevich toured the surrounding district. He was taken by surprise, and traitors, bought by Russia, secretly, at night, in the absence of the deputy opened the gates of the castle.
