Twenty-six websites blocked in Belarus this year

Information Minister Liliya Ananich told journalists why web sites are blocked in Belarus.

“We are aiming to ensure that every owner of an information website makes their own decisions about their responsible behavior in the information space,” BelTA quoted Lilia Ananich.

According to the Minister, this year access has been limited to 26 websites, including recently to 5 sites that were used for illegal advertising of drugs. At the same time, access was restored to the two previously blocked websites that removed information that led to claims from the the Ministry of Information.

Not long ago, a huge public outcry was caused by the restricted access to the popular website Kyky.org. The website was blocked on June 18, after the Ministry of Information received a complaint from a refugee and a pro-Russian activist Vyacheslav Dianov. Editors of the Kyky.org decided to avoid conflict with Ministry and removed the article, disliked by the officials. On the sixth day, restrictions on access to the site were removed.
