Russian military base close to Belarus needed to defend against Ukraine - envoy

Establishing a military base in Klintsy in Russia’s Bryansk region is a ‘preventive measure’ provided against Ukraine, not Belarus, Russian Ambassador to Belarus Alexander Surikov told journalists in Minsk on Thursday.

Bryansk region shares borders with Homiel and Mahiliou regions of Belarus and Chernihiv and Sumy regions of Ukraine.

“What’s it [base] got to do with Belarus?! Minsk agreements do not work out. Radicalism is perking up in Ukraine. Far-right forces (even more radical than the Right Sector) are shaping. I cannot rule out the possibility of the pro-war stand’s dominating in Ukraine. We would not like it to be prevalent there. We should stop it at the Russian border,” the ambassador said.

According to him, there is nothing radical in Russia’s acts, as they just want to prevent the Ukrainian conflict from spreading further. “Ukraine might be weaker than Russia, I am not going to access its military capacity, but [our] measures are preventive,” he stressed.

As reported earlier, Russia is pulling its troops closer to the border with Ukraine and Belarus. In particular, two military facilities are expected to appear in Braynsk region soon. Not long ago, the 28th separate motorized rifle brigade was re-deployed here for permanent location. Supposedly, the re-deployment will have been finished by October.
