Hrodna journalist contacts police over opposition bashing site

Andrei Myaleshka is outraged by already second defamatory article in his address.

Mr Myaleshka took a complaint to the Kastrychnitski rayon police department in Hrodna, because he believes the site ‘Stop opp’ was spreading false materials about him and his family members. Article 9.2 of the Administrative Code punishes this offense by a fine of up to 30 basic units. In the case of public resonance, according to police, the matter may be qualified under the Criminal Code.

The website ‘Stop opp’ has been criticizing Western politicians, the opposition, and now independent journalists for many years. Despite the pathos and the grandiose name, the outlet attendance is small – only two perople – and evidenced, for example, by the number of subscribers in the VKontakte, created under the umbrella site.

However, the abuse of anonymous authors got the Hrodna resident started:

“All these sites create psychological pressure on journalists, said Andrei. Not so much on me but my family and fellow journalists. I do not know exactly who is behind this, I hope that the police will tell.”

Last year Mr Myaleshka was fined three times for “working with foreign media without accreditation” (Article 22.9). This year, the journalist was summoned to the police station the same article.
