Belarus, Russia may scrap roaming charges soon

Representatives of the communication ministries of the both countries initially agreed on the resignation from charging additional tariffs for telephone calls.

During the recent talks in Smolensk, the sides made up a road map which provides for the equalization of prices for telephone calls, text messages and mobile internet in the so-called Union State. According to the Belarusian Ministry of Communications, the cost of services for subscribers will decrease as a result of the abolition of roaming. In this context, the parties hope for increasing business and tourist activity.

The exact date, however, was not given. The parties stress that “harmonization” of roaming tariffs is one of the ways to complete the task. In turn, this would require the participation of all actors on this market segment.

However, at the moment Russians are just preparing for the final elimination of domestic roaming between individual mobile operators and equating their service prices for subscriber services.

In 2017, a proposal to abolish roaming charges was voiced by speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko.
