Another businessman from Russia detained in Minsk


Criminal Investigation Department operatives have arrested in Minsk a 45-year-old Russian citizen, native of Georgia, who had been on the international wanted list for several months. Russia accuses the man of committing serious economic crimes.

The Interior Ministry said they detained the director of a construction company involved in construction of the cosmodrome Vostok in the Amur region. According to the investigation, the company received a preliminary payment of about 4 million Russian rubles, which was spent on financial and economic activities, not related to construction of the facility, naviny.by reports.

A criminal case was launched with regard to official under part 4 of Article 160 of the Criminal Code (misappropriation or embezzlement, i.e. theft of property on an especially large scale).

The suspect involved in the case managed to hide. The General Directorate of Criminal Investigation of the Belarus Internal Affairs Ministry learned the fact that the accused may be in Minsk in late May. During the week, security officials learned the suspect’s whereabouts.

The search resulted in the detention of the Russian citizen in Fabrychnaya street in a car registered in the Krasnodar region. This vehicle had occasionally been seen on the streets of Minsk for a few months. Its distinctive feature – the car body is decorated with Swarovski crystals. Detention witnesses posted a video on the Internet.

The detainee is under arrest. The extradition issue is being decided.

Last week it was reported that a Russian businessman Maxim Finsky who had escaped from house arrest in Moscow was arrested in Minsk. According to yodnews.ru, that spread this information, Mr Finsky was being held in the KGB prison in Belarus. However, the State Security Committee (KGB) denied the information about the detention of the businessman.
