Scarlett Johansson has Belarusian roots

The Hollywood star told reporters at the press conference in Moscow on April 17, 2012 that her mother was originally from Minsk, Belarus. The actress came to Russia to take part in the premiere of the Avengers in which she played the part of Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow). The film, directed by Joss Whedon, is based on the Marvel Studio’s comics of the same name featuring superheroes teaming up to save the world from a looming disaster.

«Black Widow has such a great back story, I would love to be able to explore that more,» said Johansson who already played a Russian spy in Iron Man 2.

Scarlett Johansson was born in 1984 to architect Karsten Johansson and Melanie Sloan, who is sprung from Belarusian Jews.

«My mother is anxious for us to go there,» Scarlett Johansson said, adding: «I had a Russian language teacher and I learned it phonetically but I’ve forgotten everything now.» According to the actress, she was interested in a role of a Russian spy also due to her roots.

The actress has never been to Belarus.
