Lyubou Kavaliova has received the letter in which the Belarusian Supreme Court notified that the sentence to her son had been enforced. There is a stamp dated March 16, 2012 on the envelope.
His mother recalls that during their last visit on March 11, 2012 Uladzislau behaved as if he had already known about the president’s disapproval of his clemency application.
Tatsiana, the sister of the sentenced, said that she was surprised most by the “over-polite attitude” displayed by a senior official of the detention center toward the family. «He never behaved like that previously,» she said. They were even allowed to compile a list of paperbacks in a nearby bookstore for Mr. Kavaliou to select those that he may want them to buy for him.
On March 16, 2012 Luybou Kavaliova sent an appeal to Aliaksandr Lukashenka, urging him to order the one-year postponement of the execution of her son. «I hope that the UN Human Rights Committee will have considered our application during this period,» Mrs. Kavaliova says in her appeal. «Please give my son a chance to wait until the UN examination outcome is known. I urge you to set aside a sentence by one year.»
According to news portal tut.by, Dzmitry Kanavalau has been executed as well. His relatives are under the permanent convoy of KGB officers and they refuse to talk to journalists.
Dzmitry Kanavalau and Uladzislau Kavaliou were sentenced to death for the organization of the terroristic act in Minsk underground on April, 11, 2011, with 15 killed and 387 injured. The death verdict to both delivered by the Supreme Court of Belarus on November, 30, 2011 triggered a mixed reaction in society and drew attention to the death penalty issue once again since a greal deal of people considered their guilt as unproven.
Aliaksandr Lukashenka decided not to commute the death sentences because the acts of terrorism and other crimes perpetrated by them were exceptionally grave, resulting in multiple deaths and causing injuries to a large number of people, Belarusian Television reported in its news show “Panarama” on March 14, 2012.
