Fundraising for Bialatski

Human rights defenders began fundraising money to pay fine imposed by court on Ales Bialiatski, head of the Human Rights Center “Viasna”. He was sentenced to four and a half year in prison for not paying taxes on money which he received on his foreign accounts.

The court decided that the state lost 91,000 USD due to Bialiatski’s tax evasion. Human rights activists from Viasna are hoping to collect the full amount.

“The fundraising does not mean that we consider the sentence as just. Ales Bialiatski plead not guilty during the trial. This action only aims at expressing our solidarity with the unlawfully sentenced human rights defender. We want to use all the means to save our friend” – said Valantsin Stefanovich, deputy-head of Viasna.
