Belarusian President heads for Sochi

Aliaksandr Lukashenka left for Russia’s Black Sea coastal resort of Sochi, where the Winter Olympics will open on February 7.

The Belarusian leader is expected to attend the opening ceremony, as well as meet with a number of foreign politicians and other figures on the sidelines of the Games, the presidential press office says.

In addition, Mr Lukashenka is reportedly scheduled to inspect Belarusian sports and tourism facilities built in and around Sochi.

Mr Lukashenka is likely to attend events where Belarusian athletes stand a chance of winning medals. Belarus has sent 27 athletes to the Olympics.

It is noteworthy that many Western politicians refused to go to the Olympics because of human rights violations in Russia.
