Public figure Uladzimir Matskevich goes on dry hunger strike

Belarusian philosopher, methodologist, social activist, and presenter of Belsat, Uladzimir Matskevich has switched to a “dry” hunger strike, reports the page dedicated to Uladzimir on Facebook.

Before February 15, the philosopher had been on hunger strike for 11 days but did not refuse to drink water. He intends to be on hunger strike until his demands are met. He demands to change the measure of restraint, stop imitating the investigative actions, and refer his case to the court. The demands had still not been met, so Matskevich turned to a more radical form of hunger strike.

The page dedicated to Uladzimir Matskevich urges visitors to sign a petition, which repeats the philosopher’s demands. As of 12:15 February, 5,080 people signed the petition.

Uladzimir Matskevich was detained on August 4, 2021. He was accused of organizing actions that grossly violated public order (Article 342 of the Criminal Code). On February 4, Matskevich went on hunger strike and said that if his demands were not satisfied within ten days, he would go on a dry hunger strike. Uladzimir Matskevich is kept in a pre-trial detention facility #1 on Valadarski street in Minsk.
