Old song to new tune: Notorious Sheyman takes up appointment

Aliaksandr Lukashenka appointed Viktar Sheyman presidential aide for special commissions, his press office reports.

At that, Mr Sheyman was released from the similar position that he had held in the State Secretariat of the Council of Security since January 2009.

At the same time, Lukashenka relieved Valiantsin Rybakou from his post of presidential aide in connection with his tranfer to another job. Mr Rybakou filled the position in May, 2006.

Opposition groups and human rights organizations accuse Sheyman of organizing “death squads” responsible for killing members of organized criminal groups as well as President Lukashenka’s political opponents. In 2006 he was placed on a list of persons banned from entering the European Union and the United States for allegedly participation in ballot rigging.
