Vitsebsk: Unindentified vandals desecrate grave of victims of Communists

While the authorities refuse to recognize a mass grave site near Vitsebsk as a grave of victims of political repressions, vandals destroy it.

Yan Dzyarzhautsau, a resident of Vitsebsk and chairman of NGO ‘Haisy’ states that the site has been desecrated. It was him and the activists of the organization who made the topic of the mass execution near Vitsebsk public.  Now they are bringing the site to rights. The grave is located in the forest between the villages of Drykollye and Haisy, 15 kilometers north of Vitsebsk.

There are human bones, bits and pieces of clothing and footwear in big pits. Last year, activists erected a few crosses and invited a Greek Catholic priest who gave a service in remembrance of the dead. They also sent an appeal to the Regional Prosecutor’s Office and the Investigative Committee to conduct an investigation and identify the remains.

“The inspection found that the prescription of burying is more than 50 years,” the officials answered. Neither data about the cause of death of the buried  nor exact dates were provided.

The local people say that the bodies of victims of political repressions were dumped into the grave. Who do the authorities keep silence?
