US congressman offered Belarus 'road map' to avoid new sanctions

Author of US sanctions against Belarus, Chris Smith, gave an interview to tut.by and spoke about the meeting with Alyaksandr Lukashenka, which took place on 6 July.

The American politician had prepared a road map that will help Belarus avoid new sanctions. Among the proposals are guarantees of freedom of assembly to citizens, guarantees for journalists to operate freely, as well as to register opposition political parties, including the BCD. Alyaksandr Lukashenka listened to the plan, but said nothing.

However, the Congressman still doubts that the financing of Belarus by the United States will be fully suspended: the appropriate changes in the budget have so far been discussed only in the first reading. In his opinion, the proposed reductions will simply not go further.

Previously, the US congressman met with Alyaksandr Lukashenka 8 years ago — then the head of state called Smith “the enemy #1 of the Belarusian people”.
