Solidarity with Ukraine pilot: MEPs pass baton of hunger strike

A number of MEPs launched a hunger strike in support of Ukrainian pilot Nadiya Savchenko, Lithuanian MEP Petras Auštrevičius said on Twitter.

His hunger strike lasted for a day, then Petras Austrevicius is to hand the baton to his colleagues.

On Wednesday the EP group ‘Friends of European Ukraine’ established by Petras Auštrevičius, urged the EU to immediately declare the separatist groups that call themselves the people’s republics of Donetsk and Luhansk as terrorist organisations, DELFI reports.

The group addressed Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and emphasized that the inclusion of the so called DPR and LPR into the international list of terrorist organisations would be a significant step towards acknowledging the obvious fact that the Russian government is supporting international terrorism and thus violating conventions of the United Nations.

Nadiya Savchenko is in grave condition, her defence lawyer told RFE/RL.

“Her skin is parchment-like, her cheeks are hollow, clothes bags about her like a sack,” lawyer Nikolai Polozov said describing Savchenko’s state of health after she had spent 55 days without food.

According to the pilot, she was abducted in eastern Ukraine and secretly taken to Russia. Moscow states that Savchenko visited Russia under the pretence of a refugee and was arrested. Russia accuses her of killing two journalists.

The Ukrainian officer declares she will be on a hunger strike until Russia finds her innocent and delivers her to Ukraine. Savchenko is ready to die to restore justice, which cannot leave international community unfazed.
