Russian secret services could be aware of planned murder of Nemtsov - former Latvian Defence Minister

Killed Russian opposition Boris Nemtsov could do the most important job for his state if Russia started to change, and that’s why he became a target for assassins, former Latvian Defence Minister and MEP Artis Pabriks told Brussels-based Belsat TV correspondent Ales Silich.

It is Nemtsov’s collecting information on Russia’s stirring the war in Donbas that could give a motive to criminals, the politician emphasized.

Tightening political repression against the dissidents goes hand in hand with the authorities’ fear of dissent.

“Now the authorities in Russia are very strong, but on the other hand, the stronger one becomes, the greater the risk that one may lose it. Maybe that is the thing someone is afraid of. As I see it, murders of such people as Nemtsov indicate that the system has created an opportunity: we can control and spy upon them, but, if necessary, we can kill them,” Mr Pabriks said.

The security services always keep an eye on people like Nemtsov ; they must have got messages that Boris Nemtsov was endangered, the MEP says.

“The seizure of the computers that were at his [Nemtsov’s] place will be used, on the one hand, allegedly to find the killers, but on the other hand, I think this information [the computers contain] of high importance to the people who took them,” Mr Pabriks stressed.

Boris Nemtsov irritated the system as he voiced the facts of Russian military’s participation in the armed conflict in Donbas, the politician added.
