Russian base in Belarus will hinder normalization of relations between Minsk, NATO, EU - Lithuania
Lithuanian Defense Minister commented on Russia’s intention to deploy a military base in the territory of our country.
“There is no doubt that the deployment of a Russian military base in the territory of Belarus is menacing due to additional tensions in the region and the negative impact on the Lithuanian-Belarusian relations. It will also get in the way of Belarus’s intention to normalize relations with the EU and NATO,” news agency Interfax quotes Juozas Olekas as saying.
Olekas also drew attention to the fact that Minsk had not yet announced its position on this issue.
Last week, after a meeting with Belarusian president Lukashenka, Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian defense department to conduct negotiations on the deployment of a Russian air base in Belarus.
