Russia: 350 protesters detained on Sunday

On January 28, the Russian police detained 350 persons during nationwide protests called Voters’ Boycott, human rights initiative OVD Info reports.

Most of the detainees – 66 people – were in Ufa. 65 people were detained in Volgograd, 51 – in Cheboksary, 19 – in St. Petersburg, 16 – in Moscow.

A bit later, the police released almost all activists. In Moscow, employees of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) had to spend a night in police stations. On January 27, the office of FBK was raided over the alleged bomb threat.

Sunday’s rallies were organized by opposition leader Alexei Navalny and his associates, who urged Russians not to participater in the upcoming presidential elections. Navalny was detained in Tverskaya Street in Moscow, but in the evening he was freed; no report was drawn upon him.

Although Moscow and St. Petersburg authoritoes did not sanction the rallies, there were no mass arrests in these cities. The protesters walked the streets, but went home in the evening.
