Poll: Pro-Russian sentiment among Belarusians weakens

With Russia or EU? Belarusians were asked about their best possible allies.

The study was conducted by Belarusian analytical Workshop (BAW).

On 15 December last year and on 16 January of 2016, the respondents were asked the question: Where would Belarusians be better off? There were two options: an alliance with Russia or the European Union.

In December last year, 69.8% of Belarusians were in favor of union with Russia, while in January this year only 57.7% of respondents voted for the alliance in Belarus. No such sharp monthly decline in the history of the poll were recorded before.

It is notable that the desire to live in the European Union in December was expressed by 15.1% of respondents, and in January – as many as 16.8%.

One version of such a change in sentiment is a rather aggressive foreign policy of Russia, and the Kremlin’s uncertain stance about the allocation of the next loan to Minsk.
