Sixty-four Ukrainian servicemen have been killed in eastern Ukraine since February 15, when the latest ceasefire, secured at talks in Minsk, Belarus, on February 12, came into force, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said in an interview on Monday night.
“Sixty-four Ukrainian servicemen have been killed since the truce came into effect on February 15,” Interfax-Ukraine quotes Poroshenko as saying.
Of this number, 51 were servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, 11 were soldiers of Ukraine’s National Guard, plus representatives of the Interior Ministry, the State Border Guard Service and the State Emergency Situations Service, he said.
The first and main point of the February 12 accords – “an immediately and comprehensive ceasefire in Donetsk and Luhansk regions” came into force on February 15. The Ukrainian army began pulling heavy weaponry back from the line of contact in Donbas on February 26.
Over 6,000 persons have been killed since the beginning of the conflict in mid-April 2014, the UN reports.
