Minsk chainsaw killer planned slaughter at university - police


The 17-year-old man who was running at shoppers with a chainsaw and axe in Europa mall in Minsk on Saturday was treated in a mental center before. He has been nourishing the idea of killing ‘as many people as possible’ for long.

The attacker’ name is Ulad Kazakevich, he is a a law student of MITSO, a university founded by the Belarusian Federation of Trade Unions, his coursemate told RFE/RL.

According to another student, Vlad rarely attended classes. “He was often absent, had no friends, he was rude and sometimes aggressive to anyone who tried to talk to him”.

According to preliminary investigation, the young man has a clean record, but was a patient of a mental hospital in 2014.

“The detainee took the decision to carry out massacre detained took long ago. In October, he intended to commit a crime, but failed to turn it into reality due to reasons beyond his control. The young man admitted his guilt. His motive was ‘disappointment in himself, disgust with mankind, depression’,” Belarusian law enforcers say. The attacker wanted to be killed during the arrest, they added.

According to them, Vlad is not a member of any extremist group. His 43-year-old victim will be buried on Tuesday.
