Latvia to build fence on border with Belarus

The Baltic country wants to protect itself from people illegally crossing the border.

To achieve this, Latvia is going to build a fence on the border with Belarus. This is what the Chief of the Latvian State Border Guard Normunds Garbars told the LETA agency.

Next year’s Latvia budget includes funds for drafting of border arrangement on the border with Belarus.

Work on arrangement of the border zone may begin no earlier than 2018, and in some parts there will be a fence of unconfirmed length.

This spring, there were three kilometers of the fence built on the Latvian-Russian border, which will be one of the ways to keep away illegal immigrants.

The minimum height of the fence on the Latvian-Russian border will be 2.70 meters. Overall, it is planned to build 92 kilometers of fence in some areas of the border.
