Latvian Defense Minister: 'Green men' from Russia will be shot if they appear in country

Provocative acts on the part of Russia are not ruled out, the Latvian Ministry of Defense said on Thursday.

If any armed ‘green men’ come to Lithuania, as it happened in Crimea, they will be killed, Defense MinisterRaymond Vejonis states.

“We will shoot down these ‘green men’ if necessary. But as long as they are peaceful it is the Security Police and state police that should deal with them,” delfi.lv quotes him as saying.

The top official commented on Russia’s alleged abduction of an Estonian Security police officer. This is a provocative act by which the Russian side demonstrates that it is ready to act in every way possible, Mr Vejonis warns.

The Minister does not rule out that similar provocations can be organised against Latvia that will take over the EU’s rotating presidency in 2015.
