Eurovision winner Jamala becomes Ukraine’s People Artist

Ukraine’s president Petro Poroshenko conferred the honorary title ‘People’s Artist of Ukraine’ to singer Jamala (Susana Jamaladinova) who won the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest.

“It is a fantastic victory. You have made a lot of people happy,” Poroshenko said.

In his opinion, Jamala’s victory had an incredible meaning for Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars in particular. Now, not only diplomats, but also ordinary people speak of the tragic history of Crimean Tatars, annexation of Crimea and events in Ukraine, he said.

“The whole world supported Ukraine. Your song about your grandmother and her little daughter, about your people is so touching that one cannot but support the process of liberation of Crimea,” Poroshenko stressed.

According to the president, her victory might speed up the return of Ukrainian sovereignty on the peninsula.
