‘Easter of the dead’: Radaunitsa in Belarus

On the second Tuesday of Easter, Belarusians observe Radaunitsa (Day of Rejoicing) and commemorate their departed relatives and friends.

The tradition stemming from pre-Christian times remains one of the most popular practices kept by the nation.

Believers pray for the souls of the dead and visit cemeteries to share the joy of resurrection of Christ with them.

On Radaunitsa, the Orthodox and Greek Catholic churches hold special memorial services. They included the tradition of ‘Easter of the dead’ in their worship, but the Orthodox Church discourages its members from leaving food on the graves; according to them, the souls need only prayers to rest in peace.

Belarus is the only country that made Radaunitsa an official day off.
