‘Belarusians not skilled enough’: Controversial graffiti in Minsk on occasion of Russia Day


A giant graffiti appeared on the wall of the 12-storey block of flats in Mahiliouskaya Street in Minsk.

The authors drew a picture of a Belarusian boy giving flowers to a Russian girl in the run-up of Russia Day which is celebrated on June, 12. There is also the inscription ‘Moscow-Minsk’ and a heart in the colors of the Belarusian and the Russian flags.

Its sketch was developed by the ideology department of Minsk city executive committee, but it is the Russian crew who has brought the project to life, because, according to the ideologists, ‘Belarusians do not have enough experience and skills’.

Interestingly, Minsk authorities repeatedly ordered to paint over graffitis made by volunteer artists. Some of them did beautify the city:

It is to be recalled that in January the country’s court fined three young men who drew a graffiti saying ‘Belarus must be Belarusian’ and depicting national ornament and crossed signs of the sickle with a hammer and swastika:
