Belarusian NPP is Moscow’s project - Lithuanian MP

The main problem of the Belarusian nuclear power plant is that the initiator of this project was Moscow, Laurynas Kasčiūnas, a deputy to Lithuanian Seimas, said in Belsat TV show Territory of Truth.

“It is obvious that it is rather a project of Rosatom than that of Belarus. You know, each country has proper regulative bodies which should monitor its implementation, but we can see that independent Belarusian regulators have no influence on Rosatom and cannot confront it. And Rosatom is unopposed when implementing the project. And this is the biggest problem. The project seems to be Belarusian, but one cannot discuss the it with Belarus, because Belarus is not the one who decides. And that is the tough call – what can we do under such conditions?” he said.

Security and defense; economics; politics; the ‘Russian World’ are the topics for discussion at four episodes of Territory of Truth in Belsat TV studio. Experts from Belarus, Georgia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Ukraine are taking part in the debates in the run-up of the 2018 presidential elections in Russia.

The Astravets NPP first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2019, the second one – in 2020. The construction of two nuclear reactors is provided in the agreement reached by Belarus and Russia, the reactors being supplied by Atomstroyexport, Russia.

Lithuania has repeatedly criticized the construction of the nuclear power plant 50 kilometers from Vilnius and encouraged the rest of the countries of the United Europe to not buy electricity from the future NPP.

Our neighbour is not only concerned about the proximity of the station to Vilnius, but also with a number of emergencies during the NPP construction. Among the emergencies are a reactor vessel incident, when it fell during the transportation, the collapse of the concrete structure at the site between the reactors. Our channel was the first to report on the incident. Before the official request of the Lithuanian side, representatives of the Belarusian NPP denied this information.
