A meeting of the organizing committee for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Belarusian People’s Republic was held on January 22 in the office of the Belarusian People’s Front Party (BPF).
Issues of organising a rally on the occasion of the anniversary were discussed at the meeting.
During the emotional discussion the organizing committee appointed members of several working groups.
Alyaksei Yanukevich, the leader of the BPF, voiced the text of the application to Minsk city executive committee, which includes a plan of the celebration on March, 25.
14.00 – 14.45 – Gathering in Yakub Kolas Square
14.45 – 16.00 – March to Freedom Square
16.00 – 18.00 – Rally and concert in Freedom Square
Opposition politician and former political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich raised the issue of a new title for the celebration; there were words ‘march’ and ‘path’ among the options. As a result, the majority voted for the title ‘Independence Day feast’.
March 25, 2018 will be the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of the Belarusian People’s Republic (BNR). The Belarusian People’s Republic came into existence at the end of the First World War, when Bolshevik forces left Minsk and the city was occupied by German troops. On March 25, 1918 the Provisional Government (Rada) proclaimed the independence of the BNR. After the Red Army re-entered Minsk, the Communist government replaced the Rada; its members had to emigrate.
