Another attempt: Contact group on Ukraine promises ceasefire for new school year start

Pro-Russian separatists and representatives of Ukraine and the OSCE have found it necessary to cease mutual attacks from September, 1 on.

“The trilateral contact group views it vital and necessary to reach a total ceasefire on the contact line for the start of a new school year. The parties have agreed to ascertain whether the initiative will have been implemented by 1 September,” said Martin Sajdik, OSCE special representative in the trilateral contact group on Ukraine.

The ‘regime of silence’, which was announced a few months ago, is violated every day. Ukrainian troops and separatists use small arms, armored vehicles and artillery. The both sides hurl mutual competing accusations of provocations.

“A quite interesting and balanced decision on ceasing fire from September, 1 has been voiced. The proposal has been welcomed by practically all sides. Today, there is a hope that on September, 1 we will manage to stop mutual shelling,” Vladislav Deinego, a representative of the unrecognised Luhansk republic, said.

Since the beginning of military operations in Donbas over 6,500 people, have been killed including a significant number of civilians.
