Wife of Mikalai Statkevich not allowed to visit her husband again


The politician’s wife Maryna Adamovich has written on Facebook about another missed opportunity to see her husband.

The decision was made by Homiel regional court judge Mikalai Dolya on September 20.

Statkevich has been in custody since May 31, 2020. The politician is kept in the remand prison in Homiel, while the trial, which began on June 24, is held behind closed doors.

Statkevich is followed by five other defendants in the “Tsikhanouski case”: Syarhei Tsikhanouski, Ihar Losik, Uladzimir Tsyhanovich, Artsiom Sakau and Dzmitry Papou. They are accused of organizing mass riots, acts of gross violation of public order and incitement of social hatred in Belarus during the preparation and conduct of the presidential elections.

Even relatives of the accused are not allowed to the court sessions in order to “guarantee the safety of participants of the process and protect secrets protected by law. But officially, the officials do not give any explanation for the measure.
