Belarus sells European bison to Russia

The National Park “Belavezhskaya Pushcha,” which the authorities manage, has sold a bison consignment to Russia, the park website reports.

In 2021, according to official data, the National Park “Belavezhskaya Pushcha” had 675 bison. The European bison in Belarus is included in the Red Book and is strictly protected but, as stated in the press release, the number of bison in the National Park “is much greater than the optimal number, which allows us to sell wild animals to economic entities in Belarus and abroad.”

“Belavezhskaya Pushcha” sold a shipment of bison to “Viola” LTD (Kastrama region, Russia) and sent them to Russia on May 12. The number of bison is not specified. The national park explains that Viola purchased the bison to create a micro population, demonstrate animals to tourists, and replenish the Kastrama region’s fauna.
