Kyiv says hackers linked to Belarus behind cyber attack on Ukraine

Deputy Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) Serhiy Demedyuk said in a recent interview with Reuters that hackers from the group UNC1151 linked to the Belarusian intelligence were behind the cyberattack on the sites of Ukrainian ministries and departments.

“We believe preliminarily that the group UNC1151 may be involved in this attack,” Demedyuk said.

According to Demedyuk, “The defacement of the sites was just a cover for more destructive actions that were taking place behind the scenes and the consequences of which we will feel shortly.”

A large-scale hacker attack on several Ukrainian government websites took place on January 13-14. In particular, the websites of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ministries of energy, education, and agricultural policy were attacked, as well as the portal of state services “Diia.”
