Young man stole money from the cards of social networks users. More than a hundred people were affected.
Two criminal cases were launched against the 16-year-old boy — unauthorized access to computer information and stealing through the use of computer technology.
“This is one of the major criminal cases. The volume of investigative materials is growing daily, inspectors are checking sites and pages that have been hacked. The amount currently stands at more than BYN 15 thousand. Most people who had their money stolen from the accounts got it back from the banks in accordance with the zero liability principle,” said the representative of the Investigative Committee Yulia Hancharova.
From September 2015 to January 2016 the guy hacked personal pages of ‘Vkontakte’ users and blocked them, changing passwords. Having seized the account, the suspect under the guise of this profile owner started to write messages to the victim’s online friends. The messages requested details of their bank cards, claiming that he could not use his own card because it was locked or got expired. Some people responded to the request. After securing the data, the teenager withdrew money from the cards, making online purchases or transferring funds to accounts controlled by him.
