The ex-deputy of the State Duma and Communist party member Denis Voronenkov has been killed in the Ukrainian capital on Thursday.
The former Russian MP was shot dead in the center of Kyiv, Ukraine’s Izvestia reports with reference to Vadim Rabinovich, a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada.
A bodyguard wounded the killer, but he was also injured.
The wounded killer was taken to hospital.
In October 2016, Denis Voronenkov and his wife, ex-deputy Maria Maksakova, fled their native country and moved to Ukraine.
In early March, Basmanny Court of Moscow arrested Denis Voronenkov in absentia for real estate fraud. The politician, who was granted Ukrainian citizenship called his being prosecuted in Russia ‘illegal’ and ‘unfair’. He repeatedly said that the Russian side might attempt to murder him or exchange for Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko jailed in Russia for ‘spying’. In Ukraine, Denis Voronenkov gave testimony over the case of the ousted president Viktor Yanykovych’s treason.
