Vilnius: Part of controversial Soviet-era statues replaced by flowers

Overnight into Monday two Soviet-era statues depicting a pair of factory workers and a pair of Red Army soldiers were removed from the Green Bridge of Vilnius. They were established in 1952.

The statues standing on pedestals of the Green Bridge are in very poor condition, the city authorities state. At the same time, Remigijus Šimašius, Mayor of the Lithuanian capital, admits that they do not intend to restore the statues. After dismantling, pots with blooming flowers were placed instead of the statues. The rest of the statues – a pair of students and a pair of peasants – is to be removed from the bridge by mid-week.
