Polish Sejm recognizes Volyn massacre as genocide

Polish Sejm has adopted a resolution to commemorate victims of genocide committed by the Ukrainian nationalists on the citizens of Poland in 1939-1945.

The resolution sets July 11 as Remembrance Day of the Poles, victims of the genocide committed by the UPA in the former Polish territory. The document states that the organized and large-scale nature of the Volyn Massacre makes it ethnic cleansing and genocide. The text celebrates the memory of the victims.

The document also contained the words of gratitude to the soldiers of the Home Army, self-defense forces of Lithuania and Belarus and Peasant battalion that defended the Poles and to the Ukrainians who risked their lives for the sake of Polish neighbors. The authors of the resolution called for a dignified burial and honoring of all the victims of the massacre.

According to estimates of the Institute of National Remembrance, about 100 thousand citizens of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth II died in the Volyn region, in the eastern Malapolshchy and Lublin province in 1943-1945.

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko believes that the resolution of the Polish Sejm can be used for political speculations, he wrote on his Facebook page.
