More Russian 'émigré media' to appear

Yulia Berezovskaya, head of the “Grani.ru”, told “Belsat” about the difficulties of the spreading independent information in Russia.

“Grani.ru” remains one of the few Russian publications that challenge censorship. For almost three years, access to the site has been blocked by all Russian providers on the orders of the Russia’s Prosecutor General. Our correspondent spoke with the head of the media outlet Yulia Berezovskaya in Paris, where she moved after the site was blocked.

According to Yulia Berezovskaya, currently, existence of a full-fledged independent media outlet is impossible, because one way or another, even the editors based abroad have to play by the rules.

“Even the editorial board have to comply with all restrictions, including the most absurd ones, in order not to be blocked. The threat of being blocked works very well. As for the development of Russian media abroad, there is now a strong emigration wave. We may soon see some sort of heyday of the “emigrant media” in the near future. But in general, the independence of the Russian media is now conditional,” said the source of our channel.

Yulia Berezovskaya believes that the media are in a state of war, when viewed on a global scale:

“While a few years ago we could have some illusions, hope for something, after the defeat of the protest movement in 2011-2012 and after the Russian aggression in Ukraine, we found ourselves in a completely new historical situation, in the global war situation”.
