Maslenitsa: Belarus riot police save effigies of Corruption and Bureaucracy from burning

The effigies of Idler and Inflation were burnt on Sunday during Maslenitsa festival in the Belarusian city of Brest. At the same time, activist Vital Kazak was prevented from destroying effigies of Corruption and Bureaucracy.

After Vital Kazak took ‘undesirable’ puppets to the event, he was detained by the riot police. Corruption looked like a pig in the crown while Bureaucracy was hung round with paper come-offs from Belarusian officials.

The police decided to be vigilant and seized the effigies for the time of the event. Vital Kazak got back his property only after the festival.

Meanwhile, the organizers set fire to the effigies of Thief, Terrorist, Disease, Rowdy, Boozing, Idler and Inflation.

Maslenitsa (also known as Butter Week, Crepe week, or Cheesefare Week), is an Eastern Slavic religious and folk holiday, celebrated during the last week before Great Lent, that is, the eighth week before Eastern Orthodox Easter (Pascha).
