Lukashenka: We are not going to print money before elections

Close attention should be paid to population employment, the payment of salaries, and stable prices. Belarus President Alyaksandr Lukashenka gave the relevant instructions at the government conference on Tuesday.

“We have stated sincerely and honestly that we are not going to inflate salaries by printing money or spending gold and foreign exchange reserves or other ones. But since we cannot raise salaries, the prices should be suitably matched. The matter is in our hands,” state-owned news agency BelTA quoted Lukashenka as saying.

“God forbid if enterprises don’t work at full capacity by late August – early September and not for the sake of increasing stock in storage! We don’t want merchandise stored in warehouses! People have to have a job. People have to have confidence in the future. It is the key matter for the government. Once we deal with that, the election will not be a problem,” he stressed.

The Belarusian leader reminded that the Central Election Commission had suggested October 11, 2015 as the date for holding the presidential election.

“I believe that the parliament will back the Commission’s proposal and the election will be held on October, 11,” Lukashenka noted.

The election was expected to be held on November, 15. A number of independent experts state that the Belarusian President’s intention to stage the earlier elections is rooted in economic causes.
