Lukashenka: No early elections in Belarus

There will be no early elections in Belarus, Belarus president Alyaksandr Lukashenka said at Friday’s meeting with representatives of the business community.

There have been reports and rumours about earlirizing the next presidential elections after transferring extra money into the president’s reserve fund.

According to Lukashenka, he ‘reduced the expenses envisaged in the 2018 budgetary plan by 10%’ by putting this money into the president’s reserve fund which, however, ‘does not belong’ to him, but people.

“Some people are waiting for early elections because the president has formed a big reserve fund. No early elections will be held. There are no reasons or trends to do this,” he stressed.

Interestingly, this week Lidziya Yarmoshyna, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission in Belarus, said that the presidential poll might be advanced due to the fact that in 2020 the presidential run and the parliamentary elections would fall to the same time interval. The presidential election is to be held no later than August 30, 2020; the deadline for the elections to the House of Representatives is September 10. But Ms Yarmoshyna is against the idea of combining the two campaigns.
