Humanitarian crisis in Debaltseve. ‘I don’t need peace, all I want is to string Kyiv junta’

After governmental troops’ retreat only a handful of people remain in Debaltseve, a stategic transportation hub in eastern Ukraine. Most of its reidents have left the town that became a battlefield for Ukraine’s army and pro-Russian militants.

English subtitles:

Separatists of the so called Donetsk people’s republic have occupied Debaltseve; the enemy’s munition and defective military equipment have fallen into their hands.

Civilians who decided to stay in Debaltseve seem to have a liking for Russian-backed militants although it is the separatists who have shelled the town and its outskirts for the latest months. There is no electricity in Debaltseve, its citizens face water delivery interruptions, earlier militants blew up a gas pipeline.

“We are all Ukrainians. And suddenly our brothers from another region come and start bombing us. We don’t know why. If some people did not want to be part of this society one should solve the problem by means of diplomacy, not war. It is awful when peoople are sent to kill each other. I can’t say in what all this will result. People have lost their sense of humanity. One mustn’t come and destroy everything,” a Debaltseve pensioner said.

“A lot of people who fled have not come back yet. So, there are very few people now.  Two persons and I are currently dwelling in this block,” the woman said.

“In my opinion, there wil be no peace. I don’t want peace; I would like to string the junta up right in the building of the Rada as they brought disaster upon peaceful people of this land,” a pro-Russian separatist said.

“We don’t have jobs and food, that’s why we need humanitarian aid to survive,” a woman said.
