CEC Secretary to Belsat: for some reason opposition thought we do not consider second round

CEC suggested to hold elections ealier than planned under influence of opposition politicians, noted in an interview with Belsat CEC secretary Mikalai Lazavik.

According to the official, the CEC suggested that the House of Representatives approve October 11 as the election date for “political reasons”: “November 15 is the deadline, and it turns out, if there is a second round of elections, it is beyond the deadline of the elections, it means the second round will take place later than two months before the last day of the incumbent president in office,” said Mr. Lazavik.

“Some politicians, especially members of the opposition, thought for some reason that the CEC announced the date of November 15 in advance assuming that the second round cannot even take place,” said the official.

According to him, “one of the weighty arguments” to set the date for October is that the second round would be held within two months before the end of the incumbent time in office. From a legal point of view, there would be no obstacles for November 15, said the representative of the Central Election Commission.

The fact that the Belarus President’s term is thus shortened by a month, Mr. Lazavik explained as follows: “Well, somehow he will survive it, I think.”

Alyaksandr Lukashenka said on June 23 that at its final meeting of the seventh session on June 30 the House of Representatives is likely to adopt October 11 as the date for presidential elections.

In June, the Central Election Commission of Belarus offered to hold presidential elections on October 11, although in May the Chairwoman of the CEC, Lidziya Yarmoshyna, stated that the optimal date of the presidential elections is November 15.
