Ex-presidential candidate Andrey Sannikau sends letters to his family

Iryna Khalip, the wife of imprisoned ex-presidential candidate Andrey Sannikau received two letters from him. “One of these letters is quite odd: “I embrace you and hope that at least these words will not be excised.” And such lines as “They have deprived me of defence laywers and correspondence. It might seem to have been the limit but they make nothing of it,” in another letter could not help getting my attention,” Iryna Khalip told Belsat.

Iryna Khalip pointed out that not a day passed without writing a letter to her husband. But as Andrey Sannikau expressed a desire that they would write to him more often, it may easily be seen that the convicted was not given his correspondence. Futhermore, Andrey Sannikau informed Irina of sending a birthday card to his mother but he doubted its delivering and asked his wife to congratulate Ala Sannikava on his behalf. As the politician had foreseen, his mother did not get it.

“At the end of December Mrs. Sannikava applied for permission to see Andrey. The fifteen-day period of official response has already passed but we still have no answer,” Iryna Khalip said. According to her, this week Sannikau’s defence lawyers are about to seek a meeting with their defendant.

The politician was found guilty of mass riot organization on December, 19, 2010. The court sentenced him to five-year imprisonment. Since then Sannikau has changed penal institutions three times over. Now he is known to be kept in a one-man cell of Vitsba-3 penal colony. Neither relatives nor defence lawyers have been allowed to visit him for more than two months. In response to lawyers’ appeals officials state: “Andrey Sannikau did not give any satisfactory arguments that he requires legal assistance”.
