Belarusian Statistical Committee has published data on average income between January and September 2011. The monthly salary of a statistical Belarusian was 1 275 thousand rubles, which is roughly 145 USD.
Just before the presidential elections in December 2010, Lukashenka promised that the average salary in Belarus will soon reach the level of 500 dollars. The government was instructed to increase wages of various social groups. The move was criticized by neoliberal economists and IMF.
Belarus has been struggling with a serious economic crisis, tied to the current account deficit, foreign currency shortages and dramatic inflation hikes. The ruble devaluation by 50% in May and floating currency rates lead to ruble losing its value by 189%.
