Belarusian dissidents to meet with Angela Merkel

Representatives of the Belarusian opposition participating in the Eastern Partnership summit, are supposed to meet with German chancellor Angela Merkel and British deputy prime minister Nick Clegg.

Presenting a common stance in front of the foreign officials is crucial for the Belarusian opposition, thinks Anatol Labiedzka, leader of the United Civic Party of Belarus. – The most important issue is releasing and vindicating all the political prisoners. Politicians need to remember, that prisoner have to leave from prisons alive and cleared of charges. The second demand is holding free and fair elections in accordance with the OSCE standards. – said Labeidzka.

„Our authorities will do everything to destroy political prisoners both physically and morally. Europe should follow the U.S. and impose economic sanctions against Belarus.” – thinks Marina Adamovich, a life partner of an imprisoned former presidential candidate Mikolay Statkievich.

Three former presidential candidates: Mikolay Statkievich, Andrei Sannikov and Zmitser Vus and two opposition activists: Zmitser Bandarenka and Zmitser Dashkievich are still imprisoned.
