Tsikhanouskaya eager to block Lukashenka's regime's access to IMF funds

On August 20, Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya sent letters to the head of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, and U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, the press service of Tsikhanouskaya reports.

In these letters, Tsikhanouskaya called to prohibit the regime from accessing the funds of SDR (Special Drawing Rights – reserve currency of the IMF), including freezing the exchange into freely convertible currencies until new free elections are held in Belarus.

Tsikhanouskaya and her associates believe that the funds intended for the people will be used to repress the Belarusians. The politician points out that the actions of Lukashenka’s regime worsen the already difficult economic situation in Belarus every day, and the new transfers should not help him prolong his hold on power.

  • The International Monetary Fund may allocate about a billion dollars for Belarus as part of a program to help countries worldwide combat the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Last week, The Washington Post published an editorial calling Joe Biden and the International Monetary Fund to suspend $1 billion in reserve assets to the regime in Belarus.
